Learn More About Marijuana Abuse Treatment
Learn more about marijuana abuse treatment at Bowling Green Brandywine in Kennett Square, PA
With the exception of alcohol, marijuana is the most commonly abused recreational drug in the United States. And while there has been considerable debate in recent years regarding the legal status of this drug, one fact remains unchanged; marijuana abuse is associated with a host of negative outcomes in the bodies and minds of users throughout the nation and around the world.
Though some people hold the mistaken belief that marijuana abuse is not a dangerous activity, decades of research documents the degree to which lives have been permanently altered by damage associated with this behavior. For many people, the risk becomes significantly more severe when occasional recreational use turns into heavy long-term abuse. Thankfully, with the help of such professionals at an addiction treatment and rehab center, individuals can find recovery from their addictions to marijuana.
For more than 30 years, Bowling Green Brandywine, located in Kennett Square, PA has been a safe and supportive place where adults who have become trapped in the destructive cycle of abuse can get the help they need to regain control over their lives. Through the decades, we have acquired unique insights into the physical and psychological ramifications of compulsive marijuana abuse, and we have used this knowledge to develop highly specialized treatment and rehab programs at our center that not only address the symptomatic behavior of marijuana use, but that also identify and resolve the underlying causes and co-occurring conditions that may have contributed to or been exacerbated by the resident’s drug use.
How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for marijuana abuse
If someone you care about has developed a problem related to marijuana abuse, you are well aware that this is far from a harmless activity. What you might not realize, though, is that you do not have to be a silent bystander as your friend or family member’s life is endangered by an obsession with this drug. With a few simple yet essential actions, you can help your loved one stop the self-defeating behaviors that are putting his or her wellbeing at risk.
- Educate yourself about substance abuse, the disease of addiction, and the specific dangers that are associated with prolonged marijuana abuse.
- Learn about the treatment and rehab centers that are best suited to individuals who have been abusing marijuana, and identify programs that provide the type and level of care that your loved one needs.
- Prepare yourself to have a productive conversation with your loved one about his or her marijuana abuse. Learn how best to broach the subject, how to express your concerns in a non-threatening and non-judgmental manner, and how to prevent the conversation from devolving into an argumentative exchange of accusations and denials.
- Remember that your loved one is in crisis and in pain. Keep an open heart and an open mind, and don’t let temporary setbacks derail your commitment to being a positive presence.
- Continue to support your loved one both during and after treatment and rehab at a center specializing in marijuana abuse. If family therapy or similar opportunities present themselves, be sure to participate. And as your loved one prepares for life after treatment and rehab at his or her chosen center for marijuana addiction, be sure that he or she knows that you are ready to help with appointments, transportation, or any other issues that arise.
Above all else, be patient and positive. Recovery is a long-term experience that will feature both successes and setbacks. Let your loved one know that you will be there for support through treatment and rehab at his or her chosen center for marijuana addiction.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for marijuana abuse at Bowling Green Brandywine in Kennett Square, PA
Prolonged heavy marijuana use can significantly impair a person’s ability to live a healthy and productive life. Loss of motivation, inability to find joy in activities that don’t involve drugs, and withdrawal from family and friends are common experiences. As a person descends deeper into substance abuse and does not seek help at a high-quality marijuana addiction treatment and rehab center, acquiring and using marijuana can take priority over maintaining health and meeting personal and/or work-related responsibilities.
The physical effects of chronic marijuana abuse can include damage to the heart, lungs, and immune system. Marijuana use has also been associated with memory problems, cognitive deficiencies, and an increased risk of developing depression, anxiety, and paranoia. And even with increasingly lax laws regarding possession and use in some states, marijuana-related offenses have accounted for an average of more than 800,000 arrests each year for the last decade.
Few areas of a person’s life are immune to damage from chronic marijuana abuse. But with professional help of the type and quality that is provided in a residential treatment and rehab center, past damage can be dealt with, future risk can be eliminated, and the promise of a healthy, drug-free future can be renewed.

Bowling Green Brandywine in Kennett Square, PA has been a premier provider of highly effective residential treatment and rehab services for adults who are struggling with marijuana addiction and dual diagnosis for more than three decades. Our treatment philosophy is based upon the belief that chemical dependency is a highly treatable condition that can be arrested through a comprehensive approach that incorporates medical, pharmacological, clinical, behavioral, and 12-Step interventions.
From the day we accepted our first resident at our addiction treatment and rehab center in 1982, Bowling Green has been committed to being a center of healing and hope, where evidence-based, research-supported treatment and rehab are provided in an atmosphere of the utmost dignity and respect.
The treatment and rehab methods utilized at Bowling Green feature comprehensive services for men and women, ages 18 and above, via two distinct sets of focused programming that include general rehabilitation for residents who are dealing with substance problems such as marijuana abuse and addiction, as well as dual diagnosis treatment for those whose substance use disorder is accompanied by a co-occurring mental health condition. Both treatment tracks at our treatment and rehab center feature cognitive behavioral therapy and a person-centered therapeutic approach, and both provide individualized care while emphasizing active, positive collaboration between residents and treatment professionals.
In both the rehab and dual diagnosis programs at our treatment and rehab center, treatment is provided by bachelor’s and master’s level counselors, case managers, psychiatrists, physician assistants, nurses, and clinical technicians.
The following are among the many elements that may be included in the personalized treatment plans of residents who are enrolled in Bowling Green’s general rehabilitation and dual diagnosis programs:
Medically monitored detoxification: Detox is the process of ridding one’s body of alcohol and other drugs, and is an essential precursor to residential treatment and rehab for a substance use disorder. In addition to enhanced safety and comfort, other benefits of completing medically monitored detoxification at Bowling Green include being able to participate in individual and group therapy sessions, recreational activities, and relaxation training sessions at our treatment and rehab center for marijuana addiction. For residents in our dual diagnosis program who need detoxification services, the initial psychiatric consultation and any necessary follow-up appointments are able to take place while they are in the detox unit.
Medication management: Depending upon the specific needs of each resident, treatment at Bowling Green may include medication. The dual diagnosis program at our Kennett Square location features weekly one-on-one meetings between each resident and a psychiatrist, during which time medication-related issues can be evaluated and addressed as needed. Residents who have questions or concerns about their medication management are able to meet with medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and other experienced and qualified members of our nursing staff. These professionals are also available to monitor the progress of residents who are receiving medication management services and can make adjustments to their medication regimens when necessary.
Individual therapy: Conducted at a minimum of one time each week while in marijuana addiction rehab at our treatment center, individual therapy sessions are one of the cornerstones of the Bowling Green treatment experience for residents who are in the rehabilitation program for marijuana abuse and addiction, as well as for residents in the dual diagnosis program. These one-on-one meetings between residents and counselors provide a confidential and supportive setting for residents to discuss their progress in treatment, address any concerns, emotions, or issues that have arisen since their last session, and receive appropriate therapeutic guidance.
Family therapy: Treatment and rehab at Bowling Green does not feature regularly scheduled family therapy sessions, but residents who are in the rehabilitation program for marijuana addiction or who are in our dual diagnosis program may have family sessions scheduled on an as-needed basis when such sessions have been identified as being clinically appropriate. Bowling Green does invite and encourage loved ones of our residents at our treatment and rehab center for marijuana addiction to participate in our family program, which is held every Sunday. Each family program session features an hour-long presentation followed by another hour spent meeting with the resident, his or her family members, and one of our staff counselors. Representatives from Al-Anon, a peer support group for friends and family members of individuals who struggle with addiction, regularly attend our family program.
Group therapy: Group therapy provides residents at our treatment and rehab center for marijuana addiction with a valuable opportunity to learn from and share experiences and insights with peers and staff professionals. This form of therapy is an important daily element of treatment at Bowling Green. Residents in both the main rehab program for marijuana addiction and the dual diagnosis program will participate in a variety of groups during their time with us at our treatment and rehab center. Common groups at Bowling Green include psychoeducational groups, 12-Step groups, community meetings, gender-specific groups, process groups, and daily wrap-up meetings. Continuing Care
Continuing care and levels of treatment for marijuana abuse
When male residents complete either our main rehab program or dual diagnosis treatment, those who need a structured, intermediary experience before returning home may enroll in our partial hospitalization program, which is also referred to as PHP.
The men who participate in PHP, after completing treatment and rehab at our center for marijuana addiction, reside in off-campus housing. Each morning, they are transported to our campus, where they participate in a morning process group and a variety of psychoeducational groups and other forms of group therapy. Individual therapy sessions are conducted twice each week while in treatment and rehab. Men who enroll in PHP after completing our dual diagnosis program meet with a psychiatrist on a weekly basis as part of their medication management monitoring.
In the evening, residents take part in 12-Step meetings off-campus in order to provide them with an opportunity to begin working on utilizing their skills in a real-world setting. The PHP residents and their loved ones are also welcome to take part in Bowling Green’s family program each Sunday while in marijuana addiction rehab at our treatment center.
Whether or not they enroll in PHP, all residents who complete either the main rehabilitation program or the dual diagnosis program at Bowling Green Brandywine will return home with a comprehensive continuing care plan. The day a resident arrives on our campus, planning begins to ensure that his or her transition home after completing treatment and rehab at our center for marijuana addiction is as seamless and productive as possible. Throughout their time in treatment, our residents work closely with their counselors to prepare for the post-residential phase of their recovery.
Continuing care planning includes identifying which services and resources will be most effective in meeting the resident’s needs and making the necessary arrangements to confirm that these services will be available and accessible. Depending upon each resident’s specific situation, continuing care planning may involve making appointments for therapy, sessions with a psychiatrist, connecting with community-based support groups, making transportation arrangements, and securing additional services as needed.
